The Social Security Administration (“SSA”) announced last week that it would require all existing users to have a cell phone in order to manage their retirement benefits online. While this gives slightly more assurance that the person logging on to their account is legitimate, it doesn’t stop the creation of new accounts from stolen Social Security numbers. One way to avoid an account from being falsey created on your SS number is to go on to the website and create your own legitimate account as soon as possible and avoid the risk of having one opened if your SS number is ever compromised.
