Two-factor authentication (“2FA”) can be an important tool to protect account data and information. Many applications such as banking apps, AirBnB, and Dropbox enforce 2FA or have options to do so. Some of the 2FA methods have recently come under attack for being vulnerable to attackers. A common 2FA method that these apps use is a 2nd authentication sent via SMS text message to the user’s phone. SMS is a dated protocol however, and comes with it’s own set of vulnerabilities.
